Since 2020, COVID-19 has impacted millions of people across the country. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 20.5 million nonfarm jobs were lost at the start of the pandemic, and the number grew over the years.
Even if things are starting to feel “back to normal,” a lot of people who lost their jobs during the pandemic are still struggling to find work.
For one local, it has been incredibly hard to find a job post-COVID.
“I lost my job when COVID hit and I haven’t been able to find a job since,” they said.
Being on a fixed income and having to rely on SNAP makes it hard for those who just want to provide for their loved ones and put a smile on people’s faces.
Now in December, we are truly in the middle of the holiday season. Gift-giving is one of the highlights of winter, but for those who are without work, it’s a difficult time of the year. According to a US News report, nearly 42% of holiday shoppers expect to go into debt to pay for gifts and travel during this period.
No one should have to go into debt to afford presents. As gifts and the cost of living get more expensive, it’s important to help those who are in need.
“I need Item Santa… I’m worried I won’t be able to provide for Christmas,” they said.
Now in its 57th year, the Item Santa Fund helps to make Christmas brighter for those in need. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.
There is also a way to donate online through the Salvation Army at http://itemlive.com/itemsanta
All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2024, along with a brief message from each donor, if desired.
NOTE: The application period for aid from Item Santa has closed and The Item does not process applicants. All questions about the program and distribution of gifts should be directed to the Salvation Army at 781-598-0673.
