You know what I’ve been thinking? All it took was one. One goal, one hot goalie, one game, and one unforgettable story for Marblehead’s boys hockey team.

In the Division 3 state championship against top-ranked Nauset on Sunday, the Headers looked back at their 0-6 start and laughed at it. Never quit, they said.

Behind second-year coach Mark Marfione, Marblehead won the game at TD Garden, 1-0, behind Avin Rodovsky’s goal, Kyle Hart’s assist, and Leo Burdge’s 37-save shutout.

“It’s hard to say there was just one message, but we wanted to get out, play hard, and play Marblehead hockey,” said defenseman Hogan Sedky. “If we let them set the tempo, we were going to go behind.” 

And they never did go behind. Despite a 2-on-1 opportunity and a barrage of shots for Nauset in the third period, time expired on the No. 1 seed.

The team that began the season 2-8 returned to Marblehead with hardware – its first trophy since 2011.

“We’re the most bought-in team out there,” Sedky said. “From the first-liners to the healthy scratches, I give everyone on this team credit.” 

Credit, indeed. No. 6 Marblehead eliminated No. 1 Nauset, No. 2 Shawsheen, and No. 3 Scituate en route to its title. The Headers scored 15 goals across five state tournament games, allowing just five.
