Caterpillar, or CAT, as many people know it, is one of the best providers of engines for heavy equipment in the world. You can identify CAT machinery by its trademark yellow design and reliable nature. People know CAT for its work on construction equipment, semi-trucks, boats, and more. Today, we’re looking at some of the most famous Caterpillar diesel engines.

CAT C15

The C15 was CAT’s big engine going into the new millennium. Production began in 1999 and had many advantages over previous models. The C15 had a single turbocharger and six in-line cylinders. Because the C15 fixed some of the common structural issues of earlier models, it remains a popular option for rebuilds among enthusiasts.

CAT 3116

One of the most famous Caterpillar diesel engines is the 3116, which is mainly used for boats and other maritime equipment. While other engines would take inspiration from the 3116, the fact that this model was compatible with multiple CAT transmissions made it a popular option. In addition, at 2,400 rpm, the CAT 3116 was capable of over 200 horsepower.

CAT 3406e

The Caterpillar 3406e was the last model in the 3406 line but stood out for being the first diesel engine to blend electrical and mechanical components together successfully. Several distinct facts about the 3406e helped make it a reliable and memorable machine. Despite CAT discontinuing the 3406e to focus on the C15, many modern companies still use rebuild kits for this iconic device and use it for trucking, construction work, and other industrial tasks.

CAT C7

People often remember the CAT C7 because it was the last over-the-road engine that the company produced. The engine was popular with smaller highway trucks, and CAT produced it between 2003 and 2009. At the start of the 2010s, Caterpillar shifted their focus to off-road vehicles, which is where they put their efforts to this day.
